Duolingo English Test (DET) 2026 Format

Hello everyone, and welcome to Dr. Byrnes' Duolingo English Test Show!

Let me begin with a question.

What if you could take an English proficiency test from the comfort of your own home, pay much less than traditional exams, receive your results within 48 hours, and have your test scored consistently by artificial intelligence instead of waiting for human examiners, whose judgments can naturally vary? Would you take it?

For millions of students around the world, the answer is yes. That's one reason why the Duolingo English Test, or DET, has become one of the fastest-growing English proficiency exams in the world.

Things have changed dramatically over the past decade. Not long ago, Duolingo was simply a gamified language-learning app created by computer science professors at Carnegie Mellon University. Today, however, it has become a serious competitor to traditional English proficiency exams like the TOEFL. It is now accepted by thousands of universities for undergraduate and graduate admissions. Even my alma mater, the University of California, San Diego, accepts the DET for graduate school applications.

So, it's high time we learned about the Duolingo English Test.

Now, here's the exciting part.

Unlike traditional exams, almost the entire DET is scored by artificial intelligence. That may sound intimidating at first, but I actually think it's a huge advantage. Human examiners can naturally vary in what they notice or emphasize. AI scoring, on the other hand, is designed to apply the same scoring criteria consistently to every test taker. That means if you understand what the AI is looking for, you can prepare much more efficiently and predictably.

Unfortunately, most YouTube videos about the DET never explain this. They simply give general tips or templates, and most are aimed at students trying to achieve a B2 or C1 score.

This course is different.

Throughout this master course, we'll analyze official DET sample responses, study the official scoring criteria, and identify the language features that consistently appear in C2-level responses. You'll learn not only what to say, but also why high-scoring responses receive top scores and how the AI evaluates them.

By the end of this course, you'll know exactly what you need to do to maximize your score on every question type in the 2026 Duolingo English Test.

So, let's begin by taking a look at how the 2026 Duolingo English Test is organized.


2026 Duolingo English Test Format

The 2026 test format is new one updated from d in the July 1, 2025 update.  If you have been studying with older books or YouTube videos, some of the information you learned is now outdated.to make sure you are in the new version, give some comparisons to explain the 2026 test version. 

The entire exam remains the same, takes about 60 minutes and is divided into three sections.

  • The first section is the Setup, where you verify your equipment and testing environment. 5 minutes
  • The second section is called the Adaptive Test. the ones that are scored your official DET score .the meant and potato section and  all multiple choice e questions adaptive.  The difficulty of the questions adjusts based on your performance throughout the test. The speaking and writing portion are not adaptive.
  • The third section is the Sample Section, which contains two tasks: the Writing Sample and the Speaking Sample. These two samples are not scored, but they are sent directly to every university that receives your score report. 

Scoring

The DET reports an overall score from 10 to 160 in 5-point increments. Score from the second section of the adaptive test, You also receive eight subscores.

The four integrated subscores are:

  • Literacy

  • Comprehension

  • Production

  • Conversation

In addition, you receive four individual skill scores:

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Listening

  • Speaking

Question Types

Before the July 2025 update, the DET contained 14 question types, including Read Aloud and Listen, Then Speak. Both of these tasks have been removed. In their place, Duolingo introduced a new task called Interactive Speaking. As a result, the current test now contains 13 question types:

  1. Intro

  2. Read and Select

  3. Fill in the Blanks

  4. Read and Complete 

  5. Interactive Reading

  6. Listen and Type

  7. Interactive Listening

  8. Write About the Photo

  9. Interactive Writing

  10. Speak About the Photo

  11. Read, Then Speak

  12. Interactive Speaking

  13. Writing Sample

  14. Speaking Sample

Throughout this course, we will study each of these question types individually. For every task, you'll learn the format, the scoring criteria, common mistakes, and the strategies used in C2-level responses.

Understanding how the test is organized, what each question type measures, and how the scoring system works will make your preparation much more efficient.

Now that you understand the overall structure of the test, let's begin examining each of the 13 question types one by one. Without further ado, let's dive into our first question type.
