ETS rubric 

  • Score 6: Completely intelligible with exact repetition.

    • Exact repetition = correct pronunciation of all content words + correct use of all function words and grammar particles.

  • Score 5: Minor errors but still intelligible; maintains all meaning.

    • Any mistake in pronunciation or grammar lowers score to 5.

  •  Score 4 or below: meaning is distorted or lost.

ETS sample sentences

  1. Here is how to start and adjust the treadmill. 

  2. There are many benches in the weightlifting area.

  3. We do encourage the use of yoga mats for stretching out. 

  4. The rowing machine is excellent for a full-body workout. 

  5. We have plenty of exercise bikes for cardio training.

  6. Please use the wipes provided at each station for cleaning equipment after use.

  7. If you want to see great results quickly, consider joining our daily fitness classes.

Actually, a listening test

  • To score a 6, you need perfect listening, not just speaking ability.

  • Exact repetition = repeat every word and syllable exactly, like a password.

  • Success depends on hearing all syllables, not just content words.

  • Most learners miss small grammar words (e.g., is, to, the) in connected speech.

  • Even fluent speakers often keep non-native rhythm or grammar patterns—it’s very difficult to master.

  • Real challenge: understanding connected speech and rhythm.

  • This lesson teaches three key listening skills:

    2. Predicting grammar

    3. Listening for rhythm
